Grades & Gradebook
Grades
- At Athena’s, the main focus is on the love of learning and gaining knowledge.
- Athena’s is an independent provider of online courses. The overseeing primary institution (e.g. charter school, homeschool, etc.) is responsible for maintaining the student’s school record and for ensuring courses taken fit with the student’s learning plan.
- Please refer to the Grading and Student Evaluation section of the Athena’s Handbook located in the Athena’s Resources Classroom.
- The educator’s role is to inspire, excite, and engage students through the learning process.
We view the education process as a collaboration between Athena’s Advanced Academy educator, the student’s parent, and the student.
- Parental participation is highly encouraged at Athena’s Advanced Academy. We view the education process as a collaboration between Athena’s Advanced Academy educator, the student’s parent, and the student.
We encourage parents and students to make the class their own. The courses are adjustable and flexible to meet the student’s educational needs.
Parents are free to document their child’s learning according to their educational plan. Assisting your student with technical requirements, weekly assignments, and classroom participation will help to ensure that your student gets the most out of each class.
Many assignments require Internet access outside of Athena’s, and we believe that this is best done under parental supervision. Athena’s Advanced Academy is not responsible for inappropriate content that your student may access on the Internet.
- Students, we want you to be excited about learning!
We encourage you to take ownership of your learning with the guidance of your instructor and your parents, remembering to communicate with them about your courses.
If you are not feeling challenged or you need more of a challenge, you should let your instructor know so that your instructor can assist you with adjusting the course.
We love hearing your thoughts, ideas, and perspectives. We ask you to actively participate, communicate politely, stretch your minds and keep your minds open, and have fun!
Athena’s educators work with families to adjust the content to fit the student’s ability level. Athena’s Student Success Plan begins after students are introduced to the class and have settled in.
Quick Quarter Check-In (QQCI): During Athena’s 16-week and 32-week courses, students are asked to fill out the QQCI after the fourth webinar. The results of the QQCI Form provide Athena’s Educators with early feedback so they can help families make sure their students’ educational needs are being met at the quarter mark of the semester. If necessitated, educators reach out to families to help select a course of action.
Mid-Semester Check-In (MSCI): During Athena’s 8-week, 16-week, & 32-week courses, students are asked to fill out the MSCI at the mid-course point. The results of the MSCI Form provide Athena’s Educators with detailed information so they can help to make sure their students’ educational needs are being met at the halfway point of the course. If necessitated, educators reach out to families to help select a course of action.
Working together, families learn to adjust the course content to make sure their student’s educational needs are met.

- Standard Certificate of Completion: When a course culminates, the course Certificate of Completion will be available in the course’s virtual classroom.
- Specialized Course Completion Report: (See tab below)
Tips:
- The link for the Certificate of Completion will be located after the final week’s activities list/contents list, normally found on the left-hand side of the screen. Look for the words “Certificate of Completion.”
- If you do not see the “Certificate of Completion” section after the final activities are posted, reach out to your child’s teacher.
- Download certificates as soon as they are available. After the classroom closes, they will not be available.
- The student’s name will be reflected on the certificate. Although the first name field cannot be changed by students, the last name field can. Change the last name field to best reflect what you would like written on your certificate. Editing profile information can be found on the Profile & Email Preferences page.
- To change the first name field, parents please contact the administration.

Gradebook
- Although grades are not the focus of Athena’s (learning is! :-), if users want to, they can take a look at their grades by going to the grade book.
- The last item in the Table of Contents toggles is the Course Dashboard. (For more about the Table of Contents, please refer to the Navigating Athena’s Classrooms section.)
To locate the grade book:
- Click on the Course Dashboard link located under the “Open Chat” area.
- Within the Course Dashboard area, the grades will be listed in the Open Grader and/or Grade book, depending on the assignment.
- Remember to go through the Grading and Student Evaluation section in the Athena’s Handbook, located in the Athena’s Resources Classroom, in addition to this section.
- At Athena’s, instructors have different grading policies. Those are usually written in the instructor’s syllabus.
- In our regular courses, often assignments are assessed on a completion scale.
This is what the labels mean:
- Complete! ~ All of the instructions were followed!
- Satisfactory ~ Most of the instructions were followed.
- Partially Complete ~ Half of the instructions were followed.
- Attempted ~ Some of the instructions were followed.
- Incomplete ~ The instructions weren’t followed.
This scale is translated into a percentage to determine the grade for the assignment. The scores from the work that was completed during the course are added together to calculate the final grade listed in the gradebook.
